The Rubber Capital of The World
Located on the Cuyahoga River near the Ohio & Erie Canal, Akron is one of Ohio's most important industrial centers. The city's history is closely tied to the history of rubber production in the United States. The rubber industry changed the city from a small river village into a major industrial city. In the 1870's many rubber companies came to the city including B.F. Goodrich and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. As the rubber industry took hold, the city experienced rapid growth in the 1910's as many of the rubber companies started company towns in the area. Between 1910 and 1920 the city's population more than doubled. The surge in rubber production continued during the middle of the 20th century as the U.S. automobile industry took off. The good times ended in the 1970's as worker strikes and plant shutdowns started the end of Akron's world dominance in rubber production. Akron has fared better than most of the cities in the Rust Belt because Goodyear and Firestone have maintained a relatively strong presence in the area.
Due to the decline in rubber production, Akron has been forced to diversify the local economy. Today, the major employers include the defense company Lockheed Martin who produces defense and surveillance systems in the city. The city has further diversified into the research, financial, and high technology sectors. Other major industries in Akron are metalworking, information systems, insurance, and the biomedical industry. Gojo, Advanced Elastomer Systems, First Merit Bank, and Roadway Express are other major companies located in Akron.
Businesses located in Akron can enjoy a robust air, land, and water infrastructure. The excellent interstate highway system allows trucking companies to deliver goods overnight to more than 60% of the country's consumers. Akron Fulton Municipal Airport provides regional air service via numerous carriers and the nearby Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, 40 miles to the north, has international air service for both passengers and commercial goods. The Port of Cleveland gives local companies the ability to transport goods internationally via the St. Lawrence Seaway.
