In fact, Austin is a Democratic stronghold in a state that has become dominated by the Republican Party.

Higher education is another strong point for the city of Austin. The University of Texas at Austin has attracted many high technology companies looking to tap the large pool of graduates and benefit from the research being conducted. The entire city is better educated than many major U.S. cities and with over 40% of the population holding bachelors degrees, employers are eager use this resource. With companies like IBM, Dell, AMD, and Intel; Austin has earned the nickname "Silicon Hills". The economy is also boosted by the large governmental presence in the area. Many of the city's residents are employed either employed by the government or work as lobbyists or government contractors.
