A Growin Inland Market
Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County and the third largest inland city in California. The city's early economy was driven by agriculture and the San Joaquin Valley Railroad. With the completion of the railroad and the Dust Bowl phenomenon occurring in the Great Plains, Bakersfield experienced an agriculture boom that was fueled by an influx of migrant workers from the plains and an national shortage of agricultural products. John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of these people who fled the great plains, many of which settled in Bakersfield.
The city continues to be a major agricultural area but has also profited from oil extraction and refining. Many large oil companies like Occidental Petroleum, Barry Petroleum, and Tetra Oil Company have major operations in the area making Bakersfield a vital piece of Southern California's oil producing economy. Being the main marketplace in Kern County, the city also enjoys high retail sales with all the big name department stores and auto dealerships. The city is also working to further diversify the economy. An effort is being made to increase the amount of available office and commercial real estate in order to attract companies that wish to operate closer to their employees and enjoy a more business friendly atmosphere.
The city has also experiencing rapid population growth (14%) due to the low median house value and easy access to LA County via Highway 5. The city is also popular with area residents because of the vast natural surroundings in which camping and off-road motor sports are popular. The Kern River is another popular recreation for river rafters who come to enjoy the turbulent waters.
The California State University at Bakersfield is the top school in the county. Known for excellent business and administration programs, CSUB has almost 8,000 enrolled students and expects larger student bodies as the city's population continues to rapidly increase. CSUB is also a major contributor to the local economy and culture. Events by the college's performance art companies and sports teams are a major source of entertainment for area residents.

The county was involved in the Tea Pot Dome Scandal in 1923 when the administration of Warren Harding transferred military oil reserves to private companies without the usual bidding process.
Kern County has many successful wineries and is one of the most productive agricultural counties in California. However, the county is most well known for the many Air Force and NASA installations. Edwards Air Force Base is the site of the first Space Shuttle landing and still serves as one of the available landing options for NASA. The Mojave Spaceport is another impressive installation and is capable of launching any vehicle in the U.S. Space Program.
