Charm City
Baltimore is located just north of Washington D.C. within the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The city is a major center on the East Coast and has a busy deep water seaport. The city is surrounded, but independent from, Baltimore County and is referred to by some by the more distinctive name, Baltimore City. The city is well know as the site of the Battle of Baltimore, a turning point in the War of 1812 where Americans halted the British land and naval forces that were moving north after burning Washington D.C. This battle inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner, which is now the national anthem of the United States of America. Baltimore is also home to the first monument in honor of President George Washington. During the Civil War, Maryland remained part of the Union, however, slavery remained legal and there was much pro-confederate sentiment in the city. In response to the Baltimore Riot of 1861, the Union sent troops into the city to maintain order and provide a land route between Washington D.C. and the rest of the Union. From the time of the uprising until the end of the Civil War in 1865, Maryland was under direct federal governance.
Baltimore has always been a port city. Having one of the largest deep water ports in the country, Baltimore's economy has been historically powered by transportation, shipping, and manufacturing. The city has been, over the years, developing a large base of public and private research institutions that specialize in pharmaceuticals and medical services and is now home almost 100 research facilities. The city's research credentials include Johns Hopkins University which is know world wide for its academic studies and research. Being in the same metro area as Washington D.C. also benefits the local economy by attracting federal contractors and institutions. The gains economic benefit from Baltimore-Washington International Airport, the busiest in the state and used by many as an alternative to Dulles and Regan National in Washington D.C.
The city also has a rich professional sports environment. The Orioles are a storied Major League Baseball team that play in highly modern and fan friendly stadium. The Ravens, a name taken from Edgar Allen Poe's connection to the city, have had one of the best winning percentages in the nation and have been the best defensive team in recent years.
