From the time of the uprising until the end of the Civil War in 1865, Maryland was under direct federal governance.

Baltimore has always been a port city. Having one of the largest deep water ports in the country, Baltimore's economy has been historically powered by transportation, shipping, and manufacturing. The city has been, over the years, developing a large base of public and private research institutions that specialize in pharmaceuticals and medical services and is now home almost 100 research facilities. The city's research credentials include Johns Hopkins University which is know world wide for its academic studies and research.
