The Queen City
Cleveland is a large metropolis located on the Cuyahoga river. Once named "the mistake by the lake" after a financial crisis in 1978 forced the city to default on many loans, Cleveland is now considered a "comeback kid" due to the successful urban revitalization project currently underway. The city has historically benefited from a prime location at the head of many waterways and being a terminus for a vast rail system. The city has been known as a manufacturing center and saw a boom during the post WWII years when people flocked to the city considered to in the best location in the U.S. Soon though, due to a downturn in the U.S. manufacturing industry and a the movement of many of the more affluent to suburbs, Cleveland entered a period of recession and economic hardship that preceded the city's decision to default on loans in '78. However, Cleveland is in the process of improving many of the distressed neighborhoods and has seen success in areas like the Gateway Complex that comprises two modern sports arenas and other modern downtown structures.
Cleveland has begun to develop new industries to replace the huge loss of manufacturing jobs that once powered this Midwestern blue-collar city. Now service based industries such as healthcare and financial services are beginning to bring back the once powerful economy of Cleveland. Biotechnology is another sector that is booming in Cleveland making the city one to the top recipients for venture capital. Case Western Reserve University, the University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the Cleveland Clinic are currently teaming up to develop a large research institution that will inspire many start-up companies in the biotechnology field.
The city also has more than its share of diversions. The Rock Music Hall of Fame is located here and attracts visitors from all over the world. The Playhouse Square Center is second only to New York's Lincoln Center amongst the country's largest performing arts centers. Cleveland also has a robust professional sports program. With the Browns, Cavaliers, and Indians the city is represented in all three of the major pro sports leagues.
