The Sun City
El Paso, Texas is the second largest border town in the U.S. following only San Diego, California and is near the Texas-New Mexico border as well. Together with its opposite in Mexico, the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez metropolitan area encompasses almost two million people. The city is near Fort Bliss Army Base and the White Sands Missile Range. The early history of the city is full of stories of the Old West. This boarder town has been known for its violence and vice up until World War I when the federal government encouraged local authorities to crack down on crime. General Pershing's failed expedition to capture Pancho Villa was based at Fort Bliss. the city also saw action during the Mexican Revolutionary War and some citizens of El Paso died as collateral damage to the fierce fighting taking place in Ciudad Juarez.
The city's economy first began to flourish during the Cold War when many military personnel and federal employees came to work in the area at Fort Bliss. Fort Bliss has been expanding over the years and contribute almost $550 million dollars to the local economy. The early economy was also powered by the refining of oil and copper smelting. With the establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the city has seen mixed results. Industrial jobs have suffered, including the closure of the main copper smelter, due to the low wage competition across the border, but the transport and services industries have benefited greatly. Many movies have been filmed in and around El Paso including The Day After Tomorrow which starred two local news reporters.
The culture of El Paso is a mixture of the United States and Mexico. The city is full of cultural events celebrating the rich history of Mexican-Americans, Texas, and the Old West. Having a rough and tough Old West tradition, the city has many museums and annual events that are sure to satisfy the most avid of Old West enthusiasts. Authentic Tex-Mex and traditional Texan foods are available throughout the city.
El Paso is serviced by many rail lines and interstate highways. Air Travel is available via the El Paso International Airport.
