Industrial jobs have suffered, including the closure of the main copper smelter, due to the low wage competition across the border, but the transport and services industries have benefited greatly. Many movies have been filmed in and around El Paso including The Day After Tomorrow which starred two local news reporters.

The culture of El Paso is a mixture of the United States and Mexico. The city is full of cultural events celebrating the rich history of Mexican-Americans, Texas, and the Old West.
