Indianapolis is the third largest city in the Midwest, behind Indianapolis and Detroit, and the state capitol of Indiana. Of the three largest cities in the Midwest, Indianapolis is the only of the three to have a growth rate over five percent. At this rate, Indianapolis will pass Detroit, in terms of population, by the year 2010.
Indianapolis has a diverse economy that has experienced steady growth since the 1970's. The major sector of the economy is manufacturing. Such manufactured items include; electrical components, machinery, transportation, metal products, automobile parts, processed food, rubber and plastic, and paper products. Other successful areas of the local economy include; finance and insurance, tourism, sports, and convention hosting. There are few nationally recognized companies headquartered in Indianapolis, but the city does boast one of the worlds leading pharmaceutical companies, Eli Lilly.
Indianapolis is a big sports town, home to some of the most successful professional sports programs in the nation. The Indiana Pacers are perennial post-season team in the NBA. In a state which considers itself a "basketball state", the Pacers games are always well attended by some of the most loyal and knowledgeable basketball fans in the country. The Indianapolis Colts are a hot Football team in the NFL and have entered a new era of success captained by their future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. The city also is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This is the site of the world famous Indianapolis 500 auto race. For sports fans there may be no better place to be than Indianapolis.
The city also has many cultural sites and events to visit. The Indy Jazz Festival, held at Military Park, has seen such performers as B.B. King, Cool and the Gang, and Aretha Franklin. The Indiana State Fair is also located in the city.
Butler and Purdue Universities are two more notable institutions located near Indianapolis. Butler University offers over 60 masters degree programs and is nationally recognized for its liberal arts and sciences. Purdue University, home of the Boilermakers and quality NCAA sports programs, is well known for its quality engineering and business management programs.

The BioCrossroads program run by the city is dedicated to improving the city’s already strong life sciences sector. The program seeks to develop and attract businesses that will specialize in the following areas; Agricultural Biotechnology, Cancer Research, Neuroscience, etc. They plan to expand venture capital to facilitate this program. The Indiana Venture Fund and the Indiana Seed Fund have a combined $77 million dollars for use by companies who wish to forward the BioCrossroads program. This will increase the level of homegrown talent and it will benefit the nation as a whole by inspiring similar programs.

The City and State maintain other programs that may be advantageous to businesses looking to expand or relocate. Such programs include; The Cultural Tourism Initiative, Indianapolis Downtown Inc., and the Indy Partnership which is dedicated to improving the economy of central Indiana.
