The city of Lexington merged with the county of Fayette in 1974 to become the city of Lexington-Fayette, the second largest city in Kentucky behind Louisville. Know as Lexington, the city has been a major economic player in the region even before Kentucky was a state. The city is known as the “Horse Capital of the World” and is considered the most cultured city in the region. Lexington Horse Park and Keeneland Race Course are two of the most important institutions in the sport of horse racing. The University of Kentucky has a major influence in the city. As well as being a major employer, the college has the best men’s college basketball program in the country boasting more wins than any other NCAA Division I school. The college has also contributed to the economy by attracting high technology companies to the area like Affiliated Computer Services and Amazon.Com. Other major universities in the area include Kentucky State University and Transylvania University.

There are many attractions in the city that attract visitors from all over the state. The Aviation Museum of Kentucky is one of the most extensive air museums in the South. The many horse racing facilities like Keeneland Race Course and The Red Mile Harness track are major regional venues.
