Kentuckiana
Louisville, named after King Louis XVI, is the largest city in the Kentucky and home of the Kentucky Derby, one of the country's most watched sporting events. In 2003, the city merged with Jefferson County to become the Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government or Louisville Metro for short. The city is located just south of the Kentucky-Indiana border and is sometimes referred to as "Kentuckiana" given that the metro area encompasses some territory in Indiana.
Louisville's location has historically fueled the local economy. A central location in the U.S. has made it a shipping and cargo town and allows one day shipping to 60% of the continental United States. Louisville was a vital link in water traffic traveling from Pittsburgh to the mouth of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad was a crucial link between the industrialized northern states and the agricultural south. This tradition is continued today, UPS's world air hub is located here showing the continued importance of Louisville to the shipping and cargo industries.
Other important companies located here include Ford, with two major plants, and General Electric, they operate an appliance factory in the area.
Louisville also has a near national monopoly on two products. One third of all bourbon whiskey is produced in Louisville; even more if all the smaller distilleries located in the vicinity are counted. Another interesting fact is that 90% of all disco balls sold in the U.S. are made in Louisville. The city also prides itself on the large number of independent businesses and restaurants located here.
Louisville is an important sporting town as well. College basketball is a mainstay in the State of Kentucky, and the Louisville University Cardinals are one of highest ranked teams in the nation. The Kentucky Wildcats, located in Lexington, also play one home game per year in Louisville. Twenty five of the most successful NCAA Division I College Basketball teams are located in or around the city. Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, is a world famous horse racing facility that attracts international attention.

The city has also implemented a $70 million dollar plan called MetroSafe to create an effective emergency communications network that will assure communications with high connectivity to all the community’s first responders. This is in addition to hikes in the number of police officers employed. Another $70 million will be spent to conduct a 350 neighborhood initiative to improve draining in order to avoid floods that can weigh heavily on state and local budgets. A $500 million dollar effort is underway to bring about a renaissance in downtown. The city has also recently completed a $700 million dollar expansion of the Louisville International Airport.
