The city of Minneapolis is the largest city in the state of Minnesota and along with its sister city, St. Paul, has over 3 million people in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. The city is a well run city and has been recognized by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group as a "world class city". Minneapolis sits on both the Mississippi River and the 45th parallel. That means the city is halfway to the North Pole and directly on the common east-west boarder of the United States. Minneapolis is known as the "City of Lakes" and has four major lakes in within the city that offer ice skating during the summer and boating and swimming during the rest of the year. The city was first a big lumber town and then became a grain processing city and is home to companies like General Mills and Pillsbury.
The history of Minneapolis is interesting and tied into many of the historical phenomena of the United States. During the prohibition era, Minneapolis was seriously affected by the corruption and crime that engulfed the region. In the post WWII era, the city began a major downtown renewal project that laid the groundwork for the impressive skyline of the city. The 1980's saw Minneapolis emerge as a major music scene as artists like Prince and Soul Asylum heavily influenced the American musical culture. Bob Dylan also hails from the Minneapolis area.
The city has always has strong agricultural roots but has diversified its economy over the years and is the headquarters of many nationally recognized companies. Companies like Target Corporation, Best Buy, 3M, General Mills, and Marshall Fields employ many of the areas residents and are powerful companies in the U.S. economy.
Professional sports are another strong point for Minneapolis. The Minnesota Vikings are one of the most historic teams in the NFL and have been in the playoffs and Super Bowl many times. The NBA is finding that the Timberwolves are a force to be reckoned with because of a solid core of all-star players anchored by Kevin Garnett who is considered my many to be the best forward in the NBA. Minneapolis has more than its share of hockey fans and they come out in droves to support the hometown Minnesota Wild, a recent expansion team that is becoming a serious contender.
