The Heart of Alabama
Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and the second largest city in the state. Situated on the Montgomery River in the central part of the state, the city is known for its part in the civil rights movement and the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to relinquish her seat on the bus to a white man and was arrested. This action sparked a 382 day boycott of the Montgomery transit system by the city’s black population and other civil rights activists that led to the desegregation of the city’s busses in 1956. In another important civil rights protest, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a famous civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery. In fact, Dr. King was the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church located two blocks from the State Capital.
The city’s economy is one of impressive diversity. The economy is powered by the state and local government, a major military installation, services and retail, and a strong industrial base. The largest economic sectors, in terms of employment, are services (61,405 employees), retail (34,827), public administration (25,234), and manufacturing (20,323). The three largest employers in Montgomery are the Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, the State Government, and Baptist Health Systems. Other notable companies in the city are Hyundai Motors, ALFA Insurance, Neptune Technology, and Colonial BancGroup.
Montgomery has its share of higher education institutions such as Alabama State University, Auburn University-Montgomery, and Faulkner University. Alabama State is a historically black college that offers degrees in fields such as aerospace, computer science, biological sciences, communications, and sociology. Auburn University-Montgomery offers many undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as three doctoral programs in conjunction with Auburn University and has an enrollment of over 5,000 students. Students looking for a private Christian education can look to Faulkner University. The school has a full palette of programs ranging from sciences and liberal arts to music and theater.
