The Brick City
Located just five miles form Manhattan, Newark is the largest city in New Jersey. The city is home to Port Newark which is a major part of the New York Harbor and handles much of the Harbor’s container shipping. In the pre-WWII era, Newark was one of the major cities on the East Coast and was well know for its industry and innovation. The city had a high quality of life and had a modern subway system, impressive overland city transportation system, skyscrapers, and was home to a rich cultural scene.
However, during the years following WWII Newark began to see more than its share of poverty and joblessness. Many point to the large number of housing projects that were built in the city that tightly packed the city’s most impoverished residents into multi-story projects that were the roots for much of the modern crime we see today. The movement of jobs and manufacturing out of the city, where most of the unemployed were residing, and into the outlying areas did little to help the inner city to recover. During the 1990’s and into the year 2000, Newark has begun a renaissance that has actually attracted many new residents and produced a positive growth rate. The crime rate has also begun to sharply decline since the turn of the new century.
Newark ’s economy is powered by shipping, retail, finance, and the insurance industry. Following only New York and Hartford, Connecticut; Newark is the third largest insurance city in the country and is the birthplace of companies like Mutual Benefit and Prudential Insurance. Newark is also home to New Jersey’s three largest banks and over $20 billion of invested funds. Other large employers include PPG&E, Horizon Blue Cross, and Verizon.
The city’s University Heights district is home to nationally recognized universities. Schools like Seaton Hall School of Law, Rutgers University-Newark, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey all have their campuses located in the Heights. Both Rutgers and Seaton Hall plan to expand their local campuses, insuring that University Heights will continue to be a thriving area of the city.

Newark is a historically troubled city that has been working hard to improve the quality of life for its residents and attract and maintain small and large businesses that will be the future of the city.
Education is one of the main focuses of the current revitalization effort. The city has an undereducated population that will eventually benefit from the expansion of local universities. With only 9% of the city’s population holding bachelors degrees, there is a real need to attract and develop an educated population that is necessary to support a modern high-technology economy that will be the future of Newark and the U.S. as a whole. Planned expansions by Rutgers and Seaton Hall will help this endeavor.
The biggest educational challenge for the city will be to improve the public school system. In 1995, the state took over the city’s Abbot school district in hopes of producing an improvement. This action has not yet produced the desired results and Newark continues to have low graduation rates and low standardized test scores. Currently, only 58% of the city’s residents have graduated from high school. If Newark hopes to complete their current renaissance efforts real gains in education must occur.
