A business license is an annual tax you pay each calendar year for doing business within the boundaries of the City of Ojai. It is required BEFORE any business, trade, profession, enterprise, establishment, occupation or calling is conducted within the City of Ojai -- even if the business is outside city limits or you have a business license from another city. The tax period is a calendar year, January 1 st through December 31st. Business tax fees are paid at the beginning of each calendar year and renewals are delinquent after January 31st. New businesses applying for a Business License after July 1st are entitled to a reduction in the tax fee. Apply for your business license at least three weeks prior to opening your business so that City zoning approval can be obtained. The owner -- or at least one of the partners -- of the business must apply for the business license in person.

The license fee for a business located in a residential area is a flat levy of $50 per year. If the home is located inside city limits, it is necessary to obtain a Home Occupation Permit from the Community Develpment Department before the Business License can be processed. Home business activity is restricted to those types of businesses that generate no more vehicular or pedestrian traffic than would normally be expected in a residential area. No employees other than family members are allowed, and the storing of materials is restricted. A copy of the Home Occupation Ordinance can be obtained from the Community Development Department for further information.
