Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska and one of the major cities in the great plains. The city sits on the Missouri River directly across from Council Buffs, Iowa. Actually, Omaha is the other half of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area which has over 800,000 people. The city began to grow when it became the eastern terminus of the Trans Continental Railroad in 1862 guaranteeing that Omaha would always be a major transportation hub. The city also found early economic success as a meatpacking capital in the Great Plains. Thousands of people flocked to the city from the east coast and Europe to work in the meat packing industry. The city is also home to the Enola Gay which was built at the Martin Aircraft Factory. Omaha is also the birth place of former President Gerald Ford and Malcolm X.
The economy of Omaha is surprisingly powerful, boasting the headquarters of many Fortune 500 and nationally recognized companies. The city is still primarily an agricultural town but they have grown a diversified economy that has many powerful banking and insurance firms as well as one of the largest transportation companies in the country. Ameritrade, Mutual of Omaha, ConAgra Foods, and Union Pacific Railroad are all headquartered in the city of Omaha. The city is also located near Offutt Air Force Base which is home of the U.S. Strategic Command, the successor of the Strategic Air Command.
The city also has many fine educational institutions. The University of Nebraska Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy are located in the city as well as the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Creighton University is another area school that is a fine university and boasts one of the regions best men's college basketball teams.
Omaha has is a strong cultural influence in the region as well. They have a full symphony orchestra and opera company as well as the Omaha Community Playhouse, one of the best funded community theaters in the country. The music scene is also quite impressive with Mannheim Steamroller, Bright Eyes, and 311 all hailing from Omaha.
