An All-American City
Plano is by far the largest city in Collin County and a major part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Historically, the city has seen limited growth when compared to the other suburbs of Dallas. However, the city has nearly doubled in size every ten years since 1980 and is now home to 250,000 residents. Flat land and thoughtful planning has allowed the city’s infrastructure to keep up with the rapidly rising population. Plano’s growth has slowed in the last 5 years and the city has only grown by 10% during that period. The city is running short on undeveloped land and is boxed in by other cities so the growth of Plano should level out over the next 5 year period. Plano’s residents are some of the best paid in the country. Plano has one of the highest median family incomes in the country and only a low 3% of the city’s families live below the poverty line.
As Plano has grown, the city has attracted many companies that have come to be closer to their employees and take advantage of a population, 53% of which hold bachelors degrees, that is extremely experienced and well educated. Companies like JC Penney, Dr. Pepper/7-Up, Electronic Data Systems, and Frito-Lay. The economy is powered both by large corporations and medium sized semi-conductor and telecommunications companies. Plano is located on the Texas Telecommunications Corridor that enables companies direct access to one of the largest fiber optic networks in the country. Texas Instruments and Raytheon are two other major U.S. companies that have operations in Plano.
Plano is also the site for many of the conventions being held in the Dallas- Fort Worth area. A large convention center and hotels with convention space coupled with the multitudes of major corporations makes Plano the major business destination in Texas. The city is well connected to other cities in the Dallas- Fort Worth area by Highway 75, the President George Bush Turnpike, and the Dallas North Tollway. Dallas Area Rapid Transit operates express bus and light rail service between Plano and Dallas used by many of Plano’s commuters.
