The Emerald City
The rainy city of Seattle is the most populous city in the Pacific Northwest and located in northern Washington on Puget Sound near the U.S.-Canada border. The city was established as a lumber city and has seen many boom and bust cycles in its early history due to the Klondike Gold Rush and the shipbuilding boom of the early 20th century.
Seattle's economy has been powered over the latter half of the 20th century by the arrival of Boeing after World War II. Although Boeing has moved their corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001, many of the production facilities have remained. Boeing 737, 747, 757,767, 777, and 787's are all still assembled in the Seattle metro area. Microsoft and the technology boom of the 1990's has also been a big factor in the success of the local economy. Microsoft is still one of the most profitable companies in the country and employs many area residents. Many other Fortune 500 companies are located in Seattle including: Washington Mutual, Amazon, and Nordstrom. Currently, the city is looking to develop its biotechnology sector in order to meet the demand for jobs in the future. The area is home to other large companies like AT&T Wireless, Costco, and T-Mobile USA.
The city is full of cultural and entertainment venues. Seattle is home to the Grunge Rock phenomenon and famous musical groups like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Jimi Hendrix spent many of his formative years in the city and others like Kenny G and Heart have gotten their musical inspiration in Seattle. Spoken word and other "underground" forms of musical art are nurtured by the city's strong artistic spirit. The city is also home to many festivals and performance arts companies like the Seattle Symphony Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Professional sports teams like the Seattle Seahawks professional football team, Seattle Mariners professional baseball, and the Supersonics professional basketball teams offer residents a full menu of professional sports venues. Other important sites in Seattle include the Space Needle, the original Starbucks coffeehouse, McCaw Hall, Woodland Park Zoo, and the Seattle Aquarium.

Seattle has always been a place of innovation. From grunge music to software, the city has historically been on the cutting edge of the U.S. economy. Currently, there are many government and private programs in action to improve the economy and secure the future of Seattle.
The Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle is a program that works with government, business, and union leaders to create a vital economy for the future and expand into the international economy. The goal is to promote the Greater Seattle area as a prime place to do business and as a key trading point for international trade. This is to be accomplished by creating publications, conducting trade missions, and other similar efforts. The Alliance would like other cities to consider Seattle first when they are looking for a key trading and shipping area.
The Alliance is also working to educate government, business, and unions on the ever changing nature of the global economy. This will facilitate the mission of the Alliance by creating educated advocates for Greater Seattle’s increasing role in the global economy.
