The Air Capital

Wichita , the county seat of Sedgwick County, is the largest city in the state of Kansas. The city first gained notoriety in the early 1900’s during the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement when Carrie Nation began her crusade against alcohol in the city by vandalizing the Carey House Bar with rocks and pool balls. In 1914 oil was discovered in the area and Wichita became a major regional oil hub. This new capital allowed the city to invest in aircraft production and the city began to produce the first production aircraft, the Swallow built by the Swallow Aircraft Company. The city experienced a boom during World War II when many workers flocked to the city to produce airplanes for the war effort and near the end of the war the city was producing 4 bombers per day. Wichita is known as “The Air Capital” because of the many aircraft companies that were founded here including Beech Aircraft, Cessna, and LearJet. The city continues to produce aircraft for Beech, Cessna, Bombardier (formerly LearJet), and Airbus.

In addition to aircraft companies, Wichita is also the site where a number of other companies were founded such as Coleman, Koch Industries, Pizza Hut, and White Castle and the city continues to be a major capital of entrepreneurial innovation.
