The Sheltered Bay
Carpinteria is a small costal city located along U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County between Ventura and Santa Barbara. The city is known for its safe beaches and beautiful tidal pools that are home to seals, sea lions, crabs, urchins, and octopuses. The city earned its name after Spanish Explorers found the Chumash Indians engaged in a large canoe enterprise. Many of the canoes built by the Chumash were extremely seaworthy and enabled the natives to travel as far as the Channel Islands located 25 to 30 miles off shore. The city is also known by area natives as home to the Avocado Festival. Held on the first weekend of October, locals are delighted by the wide variety of avocado inspired fare including many varieties of guacamole and even avocado ice cream. Local bands and singers lend their musical talents while vendors sell unique hand made arts and crafts.
There is a good mix of small and medium sized companies located in Carpinteria. The top area employers include QAD Inc., Albertson's, DAKO Corporation, The Salvation Army, AGIA Inc., Shorty's, and Pacific Scientific. Many of the city's residents are commuters who work either in nearby Santa Barbara (14 miles) or in Ventura County (26 miles).
The city is also in close proximity to many fine institutions of higher learning. The University of California at Santa Barbara, Westmont College, Santa Barbara City College, and the Brooks Institution are all within a twenty minute drive and offer locals a diverse range of learning opportunities.
