The Gate City
Greensboro is the third largest city in the state of North Carolina and the county seat of Guilford County. The city has been the site of many important events and institutions in the fight for racial equality. During the slavery era, Greensboro was a stop on the Underground Railroad which helped many slaves escape the south and find a new life in the free Northern States. The city also had a large population of Quakers who were staunch prohibitionists who provided much of the moral and intellectual justification for the end of slavery in the United States. During the 1861 Secession Convention, Guilford County voted against secession by a huge margin of 2771 to 112. The first "sit-in" was held in Greensboro when four black college students sat down to eat a the all-white Woolworth's lunch counter and refused to leave when asked. This event prompted hundreds of other demonstrators to join them in what became a model of non-violent protest.
The city was largely rural for most of its history and industry developed slowly. During the 20th century, however, the city gained substantial wealth and a huge increase in population because of the quickly developing textile and tobacco industries. This new growth lead to the construction of many civic and commercial buildings, many of which remain standing today, and the Greensboro finally developed into a major southern city.
