Huntington Beach is a large costal city located in Orange County and has over 190,000 residents. The city is the host of the World Surfing Championship and is known to Southern Californian locals as “ Surf City U.S.A.”

The city has an offshore oil terminal for oil transported down from the Alaskan Pipeline which is then piped underneath Huntington Beach to the large oil storage facilities throughout the area. Due to the city's close proximity to oil storage and refining plants, the typical gas prices here tend to be lower than the rest of Southern California. The large oil industry presence has had some negative environmental effects which have started strong grass roots environmental activities.

In terms of crime the city is one of the safest in the country attracting many upper middle class residents. However, residents do have to weather the occasional natural disaster, usually flooding. Many of the city's most affluent areas have been constructed on flood planes and powered plumbing and other measures must be maintained to avoid disaster during heavy rains.

The Huntington Beach has an outstanding K-12 public school system and is in close proximity to other notable Orange County educational institutions. The University of California at Irvine was ranked the tenth best public university by U.S. News and World report in 2006. UCI is also one of the largest area employers. Alliant International University, a well-regarded political science and diplomacy school, has one of their largest campuses here in Irvine. Another famous institution, the Ayn Rand Institute, is located here as well.
