The Glass City
The fourth largest city in Ohio, Toledo is named “The Glass City” because of the large glass producing industry based in the city that has developed many innovations in the production of construction materials, widows, and glass bottles. The city has a beautiful lake-side location on the southern shore of Lake Erie. Toledo has been the site of many important historical events including the Toledo War between Michigan and Ohio. The Toledo War was a bloodless conflict over a boarder dispute between the two states both of which sent out militias to engage the other state. The conflict was settled peacefully with no casualties other than a Michigan Sheriff who was stabbed in the leg by an Ohio militiaman. The city is also home to the first building to be completely enclosed in glass, the Owens-Illinois Glass Company Building, the design of which sparked the agricultural style that influences many of the world’s downtown high-rise buildings.

The economy of Toledo has been historically dependant on manufacturing. Although this sector has been in decline over the past thirty years, all three major American automobile companies still maintain factories in the Toledo area and Jeep has been making utility vehicles in Toledo since the early 1940’s. Much as changed over the years and now the city’s biggest employer is the University of Toledo. The healthcare sector is now the largest economic segment in the area and employs far more people than the declining manufacturing sector.

The city is also a popular location for shipping companies. Toledo has the one of the largest ports on the Great Lakes and is the third largest rail hub in the country. This excellent transportation network as attracted many national and regional shipping companies, the most notable of which is UPS.

Retail is another powerful player in the city. Toledo is one of the few major cities in the area and, as such, attracts many Northern Ohio residents who make the trip to Toledo to do much of their shopping an big item purchases.
