Anchorage is the center of Alaskan commerce and the State’s only major population center. The local economy is powered by transportation, corporate headquarters, communications, and defense.
Home to a major port and the hub of the Alaskan railroad, Anchorage is the entrance point for over 90% of the goods coming into or exiting Alaska. The city is the regional headquarters for many large corporations such as Alaska Petroleum Company, Union Oil Company, and VECO. BP, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips. Many banks, real estate companies, and government agencies are located here as well.
Anchorage is also the major communications hub for the region and is home to companies like Alaska Communications Systems and General Communications, Inc. who provide cellular and conventional telephone service and broad band internet access. The area is also home to two strategically important military installations, Elmendorf AFB and Fort Richardson. |
