Atlanta, with one of the most culturally diverse and well educated populations in the South, has been a place of great cultural and religious influence.
Atlanta is known as the capital of the Bible Belt and religious leaders based here have lead a variety of religious movements. Most of the city’s residents claim to follow Protestant Christian religions and the city is home to many large Southern Baptist churches. Religion also influences local private education institutions more than 85% of the local private schools have religious affiliations.
The national music scene has also been heavily influenced by musicians based in Atlanta. Gladys Knight and the Pips, TLC, Jermaine Dupri, OutKast, Whitney Houston, Collective Soul, and John Meyer all call Atlanta home and record a majority of their music in area studios.
Professional sports are another attraction for fans from all over the state. The Atlanta Braves have been one of the best Major League Baseball team over the last 15 years and the Falcons are a talented pro football team with one of the best young players in the league, Michael Vick. Pro basketball is locally represented by the Hawks and the city has a relatively new NHL team, the Thrashers. |
