Atlanta, with over four million people in the metro area, is the capital of Georgia and one of the most prominent cities in the South. After this period of reconstruction, Atlanta was nicknamed "The Phoenix City" and became the capital of the "New South". The city was also the center of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and helped usher in a new era for African-Americans living in the South. The city continues to be well know among the African-American business community as one of the best American cities to do business. Atlanta was chosen ahead of many global metropolises as the host of the 1996 Olympic Games.

Historically, Atlanta has been one of the most prosperous Southern cities and continues today as the economic capital of the South. The economy is powered by major U.S. corporations and government agencies. Atlanta is home to many Fortune 500 companies such as Coca Cola, BellSouth, UPS, Georgia-Pacific, and Home Depot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Mint are both based in Atlanta and draw many health research and financial companies to the area. Mass media is another bright spot in the local economy. CNN, Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS, and The Weather Channel are all based here in Atlanta and are staples of cable providers across the country. Delta Airlines uses Atlanta International Airport as its North American hub and has helped develop Atlanta's airport into a world class facility used by many airlines and air-freight companies.
