Gateway to the Rockies
As a part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan area, Aurora is the 61st largest city in the nation and the third largest in Colorado. After WWII Aurora began to grow quickly as the major suburb of Denver as the trend of post-war suburban development began to sweep the nation. The city was one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. during the 1970's and has a population over half the size of Denver. The city was once home to the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center which is known as the birthplace of Senator John Kerry and the site of President Eisenhower's recovery from a massive heart attack. The hospital has been decommissioned by the Army but is being redeveloped as a health sciences center for the University of Colorado and is also the site for the Colorado Bioscience Park.
The city is ideally located in the Denver metro area and is well connected with three major roadways including E-470 and Interstate Highways 225 and 70. The Denver International Airport, one of the largest in the nation, allows Aurora residents to access the entire globe. Although Aurora started as a bedroom community for Denver, the city is now home to more than 10,000 businesses and public institutions that employ over 100,000 people. Notable area employers include companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Kaiser Permanente, and ADT Security Services.
Many companies are attracted to the area by the well educated workforce, over 30% of which have bachelors degrees, and the impressive regional transportation network. The city is also home to thousands of acres of business parks and major distribution centers. The 6,700-acre TransPort helps businesses and transportation companies link air, rail, and truck transportation with major employment centers. Another popular feature of the city is the low housing costs. The median house price is near $200,000 and the average rent is only $733, this combined with the relatively high median household income, $46,507, makes for a very high standard of living.
