Austin, the capitol of Texas, is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the United States. The city has been a prominent city in Texas since it was declared the capitol of The Republic of Texas and is named for one of the most famous Texans in history, Stephen F. Austin. There have been attempts to strip Austin of its status as capitol but all have failed. Another prominent Texan, Sam Houston President of Texas at the time, attempted in 1842 to relocate the capitol during what was called the Texas Archive War by sending a team of men to steal the state archives and take them to Houston. After Texas became a state, there were two unsuccessful attempts to move the capitol.

The city became well known as the state's music capitol after a group of musicians, which included Willie Nelson, came to Austin to establish a country and western culture outside of Nashville. Austin was the place for alternative country artists could come to get discovered by playing at one of the city's many well attended live music venues.

There was a boom in development during the 1970's and 80's that sparked many political battles between the environmentalists and those who favored increased development. The city still has a strong environmentalist movement and has resisted much of the urban sprawl that surrounds most major cities in Texas. In fact, Austin is a Democratic stronghold in a state that has become dominated by the Republican Party.

Higher education is another strong point for the city of Austin. The University of Texas at Austin has attracted many high technology companies looking to tap the large pool of graduates and benefit from the research being conducted. The entire city is better educated than many major U.S. cities and with over 40% of the population holding bachelors degrees, employers are eager use this resource. With companies like IBM, Dell, AMD, and Intel; Austin has earned the nickname "Silicon Hills". The economy is also boosted by the large governmental presence in the area. Many of the city's residents are employed either employed by the government or work as lobbyists or government contractors.
