Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and the most populous city in North Carolina. Known as the "Queen City", Charlotte is a city with a long historical past. Charlotte was a key city in the U.S. victory in the Revolutionary War. Both the British and American armies were based here and the city was rife with revolutionary sentiment, and currently has many sites named "Independence" and "Freedom". Lord Cromwell, the British General, became quite frustrated with the villagers and named the city the "Hornets Nest" for the heavy losses his troops suffered here. The area was also the first gold find in the U.S. and sparked a gold rush in the early 1800's. These gold finds lead the federal government to establish a U.S. Mint in Charlotte.

The economy of Charlotte is based heavily on the finance industry. The city is home to more financial assets than any other city besides New York. The nations second, Bank of America, and fourth, Wachovia, are headquartered in the city. Thanks to the large number of financial institutions located here, the city's skyline has become one of the most beautiful in the country. Other large companies headquartered here include: Lowes, Duke Energy, and Goodrich Corporation.

There is a strong religious culture in the city as well. Home to Billy Graham, the two most prominent religions are Southern Baptist and Southern Methodist. The city has over 700 places of worship and has many synagogues, temples, and mosques as well. Charlotte is also home to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Charlotte boasts one of the best professional football teams in the National Football League. The Panthers have been playoff contenders in the past few seasons and were narrowly defeated by the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII. The city has many other points of interest as well. They include: Discovery Place, the Carolina Raptor Center, and Lowes Motor Speedway. Kings Mountain National Military Park is a historic battle site from the Revolutionary War and is located just minutes west of town.
