America's City
Dallas is the economic and cultural center of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This area is the fifth largest metropolitan area in the country. Dallas also is home to more corporations than any other U.S. city boasting such companies as Exxon Mobil, Nokia, 7-Eleven, CompUSA, Greyhound Bus Lines, and Kinko's.
Dallas first thrived as an agricultural trade center trading the cotton and grain produced in the region. However, with the oil boom in Texas, Dallas became the financial capitol of the Texas and Oklahoma oil trade. Banking and Insurance are still large factors in the Dallas economy, but other sectors have begun to develop. Central Dallas is equipped with over 100 miles of fiber optic cable and the economy of Dallas is now largely powered by the telecommunications industry. Boasting such companies as AT&T, Ericsson, MCI, Southwestern Bell, and Nortel Networks; Dallas employs more than 40,000 telecommunications employees. Dallas is often referred to as "Texas's Silicon Valley" and although the economy was hurt by the latest recession, Dallas' economy has performed better than its regional counterparts.
Despite Dallas' strong economy, the city has had the highest crime rate of large cities from 1998 to 2003. The crime isn't widespread, most of the city is relatively crime-free, but some of the city's surrounding areas and run-down apartment complexes have extraordinarily high crime rates.
The city's culture is quite unique. Dallas resides in the "Bible Belt" and has a large Protestant influence. Methodist and Baptist churches are located all over the city and are anchored by a generally religious population. Southern Methodist University is locate here and also greatly contributes to the educational and religious climate of the city.
Dallas is also a major professional sports city. Sundays, during football season, most residents can be found in front of their televisions or at Texas Stadium in Irving watching the Dallas Cowboys. The team is often referred to as "America's Team" and enjoys a national fan base. The Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team also receives much local and national attention, sometimes less for the players and more for the eccentric owner of the team Mark Cuban.
