In the middle of the 20th century, Fort Wayne was one of the major manufacturing centers in the United States. Essex Wire, Phelps Dodge, and Rea Wire represented the largest concentration of copper and enamel wire manufacturing in the world. General Electric, International Harvester, and Tokheim were other major manufacturers that were located here. However, many of these companies have since left the city and Fort Wayne fell into the economic stagnation that plagued much of the Rust Belt cities. The economy began to recover beginning in the 1980's as General Motors opened a truck and bus plant that helped the city regain some of its lost manufacturing jobs. Transportation and shipping are also powerful sectors in the city. Norfolk Southern, TransWorks, and Kitty Hawk account for almost 3,000 jobs in the city. The defense industry is well represented in Fort Wayne with big names like ITT and Raytheon providing more than 2,000 jobs combined. There are a number of insurance companies located in Fort Wayne giving the city one of the largest concentrations of insurance companies in the region. Financial companies like Lincoln Financial and Star Financial Group are also large area employers.
