Brew City, USA
Located in southeast Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is one of the largest cities in the Midwest and, including the entire metropolitan area, has almost two million residents. During the first half of the 20th century, Milwaukee saw huge growth from Eastern European, German, and African-American immigrants from the Southern States. During this time Milwaukee, like many northern industrial cities, prospered greatly from the large number of blue-collar jobs in manufacturing. However, during the latter half of the 20th century, like most of the Great Lakes area, Milwaukee has seen a decline in population due to such factors as the loss of many manufacturing and industrial jobs. Many manufacturing jobs have remained and the city is in the midst of renovating many areas of the city such as Bay View, downtown, and the Third Ward.
The economy of Milwaukee is still largely based on manufacturing. Over 22% of the workforce is employed in manufacturing jobs, second only to San Jose, California by percentage. Services and management are currently the fastest growing part of the local economy and healthcare services jobs are also on the rise. The city has been known as a center for the brewing of beer and still has many large and micro breweries in the metro area. Miller Brewing Company is the largest of the area brewers and employs many area workers. Many financial services companies specializing in mutual funds are located here and the city is also home to a large number of publishing houses. Some of the large companies located here include: Briggs & Stratton, Northwestern Mutual, Wisconsin Energy, and Harley-Davidson.
The city has a rich culture and a strong tradition of fine breweries that is available for enjoyment by locals and visitors. The city has more bars per capita than any other major American city and also has a fine nightlife with many clubs featuring live music. Professional sports are also a big draw in the city. The Brewers Major League Baseball team is a highly followed team in the region. Visitors to Brewers games can not only find great baseball in a modern stadium, but the tailgating that takes place in the stadium parking lot is an equal part of the experience. The Milwaukee Bucks professional basketball team is another well attended sports venue.
