The Steel City
Home of the U.S. steel industry, Pittsburgh is one of the top metro areas in the U.S. with over 2.3 million people. Pittsburgh is located on the Ohio River and was one of the first cities established by Europeans on this vital waterway. The city was the first nuclear powered city in the world when the Shippingport power plant opened in 1960. The city has been in a mild decline since the 1970’s when the U.S. steel industry began to move operations out of the country to take advantage of cheap foreign labor. The city is also trying to recover from a financial crisis that has caused the State of Pennsylvania to declare the city a distressed municipality.
Pittsburgh ’s economy is in the middle of a long process of transformation. With the loss of many steel and manufacturing jobs, the city has been turning to biotechnology, robotics, and finance. The robotics industry has begun to take off causing the Wall Street Journal to name the city “Roboburgh”. The Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute has been at the forefront of this process and has attracted many private robotics firms to the area. The city is also home to many charity organizations like the Heinz Foundation. The city is home to many Fortune 500 companies such as HJ Heinz, Alcoa, GNC, U.S. Steel, and PPG Industries.
Higher education is the area in which the city can be most proud. The University of Pittsburgh, also referred to as Pitt, is one of the top medical schools in the world and home to a prominent organ transplant institute. In addition, Pitt has other elite graduate programs in law, business, and engineering. Carnegie Mellon University is one of the top computer science schools in the world and has the oldest drama program in the U.S.
Professional sports are another strong point for Pittsburgh. The Steelers are considered by most as the best football teams of all times with four Super Bowl championships. The Penguins, NHL, and Pirates, Major League Baseball, are teams with extremely loyal fans and storied histories.
