Capital of the Inland Empire
Riverside is the unofficial capital of the area know as the Inland Empire. Located east of Los Angeles, Riverside is one of the fastest growing cities in California. The city’s population has grown 8% since the year 2000 largely due to a low median house value of $138,500. The city also has a low population density and a very low poverty rate for the area. Riverside has always been a major city in Southern California, but due to the recent growth, the city has seen a large increase in the retail and service industries. The city serves as a hub for customers from the smaller outlying areas like Corona and Moreno Valley who come to shop at Riverside’s larger malls and high volume car dealerships.

Riverside grew to prominence in its early years due to the large cultivation of Naval Oranges that started with a boom in the late 1800’s. By the turn of the century, Riverside was the capital of California’s citrus production. The beautiful natural surroundings and impressive orange groves started a decent tourist industry in Riverside and many luxurious hotels were built in order to cater to the wealthy clientele that came for vacation. The Mission Inn is one of the best luxury hotels in the region and offers a distinct mission atmosphere that has attracted guests for many years. Riverside was the site for one of the largest Chinatowns in California, however most of the former Chinatown was demolished in the 1970’s in order to build a more modern shopping and commercial area.

The city is also home to the only University of California in the Inland Empire. University of California at Riverside is the best university in the region and educates one of the most diverse student bodies in the UC system. Other institutions located in Riverside include California Baptist University, La Sierra University, and Riverside Community College.

The local economy is largely built to support and govern the outlying rural agricultural areas and to provide services to the suburban areas housing commuters working in Los Angeles County. Health care and the county government are two of the largest area employers. The city has also developed a light manufacturing industry and a small high-tech field .
