Sacramento, the capital of California, is a large city located northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area. The area has long supported many Native American tribes until the Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga discovered the area in the early 1800's. The foundations of the modern city of Sacramento were laid during the gold rush of 1849. The city became the capital in 1854 when the state legislature moved the capital from San Jose.
The city has long been a transportation hub. The American and Sacramento rivers have served the city well by attracting commerce and visitors to the area. Many of the early public works projects were financed by taxing goods being transferred from riverboats to trains at the Sacramento Rail Yards. In the past, the city has been devastated by floods but the city has been raised by landfill to eliminate the risk of floods. In fact, many of the older buildings have basements that were once above ground.
The city's economy is largely powered by the California State Government. Government agencies are by far the biggest employers in the area have kept the economy stable despite major military base closures in the 1980's and 90's. Transportation and agriculture are two other sectors that employ many of the area residents. The city is still seeing positive growth from people moving in from the Bay Area looking for cheaper housing costs. Immigration from Eastern Europe, Mexico, and Asia also contributes to the increasing population. The city also has the most widely circulated newspaper in the state, the Sacramento Bee.
The city is also home to a number of fine educational institutions. The University of California at Davis in located just minutes outside the city and is one of the top schools in the University of California system. California State University; Sacramento, is another major university located in the city. Alliant International University also has a campus here offering many graduate programs.
The Sacramento Kings, NBA, are considered the heart and soul of the city by many residents. The Kings have been one of the top teams in the NBA over the last 10 years and have an extremely loyal fan base. Kings games have the rowdy atmosphere of a college game and is unlike some of the more flashy professional teams.
