Located south of San Francisco; San Jose is the third largest city in the State and the largest city by population in the San Francisco Bay Area. San Jose began as a small farming community and grew to become the first capitol of California. As military veterans returned from World War II, San Jose began a rapid expansion as returning veterans started families and looked for work. The people of San Jose produce more patents than any other city and the worker productivity is double the national average. Another notable aspect of San Jose is that 35% of U.S. venture capital dollars are invested in Silicon Valley companies.

Many high tech companies have operations employing over 1,000 people in San Jose including Cisco, eBay, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Lockheed Martin. The City of San Jose and San Jose State University are also large employers.
