A “slow growth” policy has caused a tight housing market in SLO and many of the County’s residents must live in the outlying cities of Atascadero and Paso Robles.
Atascadero is a mainly a residential city that has a relatively large retail market. At the Atascadero Outlet Mall almost every major retail company is represented. Nike, Adidas, Guess, and Liz Claiborne are just a few of the shops available. The city is also the site of the only zoo on the Central Coast. The Atascadero State Hospital treats people with psychiatric disorders some of which are court mandated and is the city’s largest employer.
Paso Robles has been steadily growing due to the growing wine market and the Mid State Fair which has become well attended by Central Coast residents. The city as always been a favorite place for travelers to stop for gas and eat at one of the city’s fine restaurants. The annual Paso Robles wine festival has become extremely well attended and represents more than 30 wineries. |
