Washington D.C. is the capital city of the United States and the seat of government for the Federal District of Columbia. In fact, the district is governed by the Washington municipal government effectively making both the same entity. The all three branches of the federal government and the headquarters for most federal agencies are located in Washington D.C. The city is also the headquarters for the World Band, International Monetary Fund, and the Organization of American States. The presence of such institutions has made Washington D.C. a focal point for political movements and demonstrations. The city is also a Mecca for tourists who come to visit the numerous historical landmarks and museums including: the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, the Smithsonian museums, the White House, and the Capital Building.

The Federal Government forms the basis for the local economy. Most of the area's population is employed either by the Federal Government or by one of its contracting companies. Federal agencies such as the Department of Defense and the Food and Drug Administration have attracted major companies to the area who wish to lobby or contract with government agencies. Nonprofit organizations, law and lobbying firms, federal contractors, administrative companies, and catering account for much of the area's employment. The area, due to the permanent federal presence, has, in effect, become recession-proof. The area is also home to many Fortune 500 companies such as: Fannie Mae, Fannie Mac, Nextel, Choice Hotels, and Capital One. Other notable area companies include: MCI Communications, XM Satellite Radio, PBS, and the Discovery Channel.

The city is also home to many of the nation's finest educational institutions. Georgetown, with its excellent law school, Howard University, George Washington University, and American University are all located in Washington D.C. or the outlying areas.

Washington D.C. also has a full complement of professional sporting teams. The Washington Redskins are one of the most historically successful teams in the NFL and are benefiting from a new high tech sports arena. The city has also recently gained a Major League Baseball team the Washington Nationals.
