The City of Guadalupe is located approximately 10 miles west of Santa Maria, and is an important historic and multicultural area of Santa Barbara County in California. Chumash Indians and Mexican descendents were the first to reside in the area. Guadalupe is an early American settlement in Santa Barbara county, and was settled by Swiss, Portuguese, Scotch-Irish, and Italians. With the coming of the railroad, Chinese settled in the area, followed by Japanese, Filipinos, and Koreans. Though Guadalupe is one of the oldest towns in the area and once had the potential of becoming a metropolis, commerce shifted to Central City, which later became the city of Santa Maria. Guadalupe is now an isolated, rural agricultural community, has an unemployment rate of almost 20%, and is the poorest area in Santa Barbara County. Many of the residents depend on seasonal agriculture as its primary income source, and 35% of the community’s 6,575 residents live near or below the poverty line.
