I Built It, But They Did Not Come!
Over the last couple of months, I have been receiving calls from concerned owners who have spent a lot of money on their websites, but have not gotten the results they were promised. After much thought, I decided to boil down these concerns into three main mistakes companies have made – without knowing they were making them.
|
- The Website Is Not Search Engine Friendly
Almost all the owners I spoke to knew that search engines are the main source of customer traffic, but did not know that in order to place higher in search engine results, their website had to be designed in a search engine friendly way. In general, all search engines look for three things when deciding which websites to place toward the top of search engine results. First, how relevant is the wording on your website to the key words used in search engine results. For example, if a key word for your website is “fresh organic fruit,” but the text on your website only discusses “fruit”, the search engines will give you a lower page placement in search results. Second, how organized is your site? For example, every website should have a site map. The site map shows a person, and just as importantly the search engine spiders, how to get from one page to another within your website. And finally, there are a multitude of technical elements (Alt Tags, Meta Tags, Section Headers, banned IP’s) that add significantly to the richness of the search engines’ visit to your site. These must be done right to get higher placements, or worse yet avoid being banned for spamming.
- Companies Do Not Submit Their Website
Many of the owners I spoke to had no idea that their website must be submitted to search engines in order for their website to be picked up quickly by search engines – they just assumed once their website was put together, it would automatically be placed in search engine results. What this means for your company, is that if you do not submit your website to search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN, your website may never show up in search results. Aren’t you glad to know that the websites we design are submitted to search engines and key directories as a standard service?
- Companies Do Not Promote Their Website
Most of the owners I spoke to were surprised to find that it is just as important to promote their website as it is to have great site design and content. This is where a lot of companies fail in gaining the customer base they planned to attract when they were originally designing their website. Companies can have a great website, but if customers are not aware of the website, what good is that? This is why we offer various ways to promote your website, such as linking to and from other websites, to pay-per-click advertisements on other websites, to advertisements on other websites.
I found that once the owners I spoke with knew these three mistakes existed and that they are very important components for the prosperity of their websites, they were very appreciative for the advice and were ready to get their websites in optimal form so that their customers will come.
